Prenuptial agreements are no longer controversial

Not that long ago, people might have found the suggestion of drafting a prenuptial agreement somewhat offensive. Many people viewed prenuptial agreements as an indicator that someone lacked commitment to the marital relationship.

However, social attitudes have changed dramatically in recent years. People no longer tend to have a negative view of prenuptial agreements or the people who execute these protective marital contracts. Increased acceptance of prenuptial agreements can make it easier for people to start their marriages as strongly as possible.

Prenuptial agreements aren’t just about divorce

While establishing terms for a prenuptial agreement, engaged couples discuss major issues such as how they intend to manage the household budget or what their expectations are for children. The process of negotiating a prenuptial agreement forces couples to talk about many of the same matters they might discuss in premarital counseling.

By clarifying matters regarding what they expect from the marriage, they can start the marriage off with shared values and expectations instead of unspoken expectations that might eventually foster resentment between the spouses. Spouses can work together toward their shared goals.

Additionally, the process of negotiating prenuptial agreements can take some of the mystery and romance out of the concept of divorce during difficult times in a marriage. People who know exactly what to expect are less likely to choose divorce impulsively when they experience a downturn in their marriage or go through a lull in their relationship where things become stagnant.

Discussing what will happen during the marriage and if the couple divorces can lead to a healthier marriage and limit the likelihood of a messy divorce. Couples who negotiate prenuptial agreements may enjoy stronger marriages and may face less stress if the marriages fail.
